Having lived in the neighbourhood before for my first solo living experience, the little streets and alleyways bring back a lot of fond memories. I always love coming back, wandering and discovering the newcomers in the block. I remember visiting Why50 a while back and fell in love with its special vibes.
It is a chill and casual and hip cafe but this is not what makes it the most special. It is the heart and passion behind it. It is the attention they place on different talents, just like the different perspectives that their founders, coming from different walks of life (think pilot + barista + charity + marketing + tea master), bring to this amazing cafe. The emphasis that they place on the stories behind the beans, behind the farmers, and extending to the community - behind local artists, behind the neighbourhood. It is the liveliness that comes with each coffee, each dish that they serve. Making a cup of coffee and a delicious dish is hard but they may not be the reason to love a place. The people and the connections are way more important.
Talking to Why 50 about their plant-based initiative is a wonderful experience. It is totally a joyful tears episode that we were talking about the other day my fellow SocialVegans. They are so committed to make everyone happy, vegans and non-vegans. And here, SocialVegan is very proud to introduce Why50 as our new eatery partner! And to let all the SocialVegans know about the lovely story behind Why50! They are also testing and creating more vegan options, so SocialVegans, let’s show them some support and encouragement by visiting them!
Who is Why50?
Why50 is your hip & chill coffee neighbor in Hong Kong Sheung Wan. “Why 50” is a story from coffee farmers to customers as we counted that “50” pieces of coffee bean can produce ONE espresso shot. We would like to tell the story of those hardworking coffee farmers behind the cup of coffee. We would like to make people “think” - coffee is not just about a drink. There are people who “create” it and “live” for it.
Why did you choose to become a SocialVegan eatery partner?
We believe that being a vegan is tough. It is not about changing the eating habit. It is more about the determination of being a vegan. As a cafe owner, I can see that our customers are looking for “green”, “healthy”, “organic” food options. Why don’t we step forward to do a little bit more, bringing some “vegan”options to our cafe and making them happier?
If we can do a little bit more (even if it will make our operation more complicated), and with the “little bit more” make our customer feel more comfortable and show more of their smiling faces here, we are happy to deal with this “little bit more”!
