To Soupday: A warm welcome to the SocialVegan family!

Our pleasure to introduce the latest comer to the wellness gourmet scene - Soupday!

Soups…?

Soup is a kind of staple food in Chinese cuisine. A good bowl of soup is so comforting that in traditional Chinese families the kitchen master of the family always reserves a bowl of warm soup for whoever skipping the family dinner and coming home late. This is both as a gesture of love and also practicality to ensure that their loved ones get enough nutrients no matter what they have eaten outside (our master chefs tend to think that we only eat junk outside!).

Even though soups have been a traditional part of our cuisine, we have been starved of gourmet but easily accessible double boiled soups in Hong Kong. Double boiling, similar to “bain marie" in French cuisine, is a traditional Chinese cooking technique by submerging a ceramic pot within an outer pot of boiling water and steaming the pot for over three hours. This technique allows for a much slower and gentler process and achieves a maximum extraction of flavour with little compromise to the flavour, texture or the nutritional values of the ingredients used.

As busy Hong Kongers, it is difficult for us to set aside some time for this delicate soup-making process during the day. Many restaurants and housewives opt for the easier boiling process to save time. Really excited to see Soupday bringing these nutritious and delicious elixirs to us!

From the start, Soupday has in mind the needs of vegans and vegetarians in Hong Kong and have always offered a plant-based option for each of their main categories, be it soup, congee, or rice. They also offer steamed organic vegetables and vegetarian dim sum, which are both plant-based options.

Make soups part of your routine!

There are many different ways to slot Soupday into your routine - you can order their soup online or give them a call in advance and pick up at 5 Shin Hing Street, or get delivery from Foodpanda, Honestbee, Deliveroo, or Uber Eats! They have truly gone out of their way to make life easier for us!

The future is in your hands!

They are also considering a line dedicated to vegans and vegetarians. So show them some support and let’s grow their plant-based offerings together!

The story of Soupday begins…

…with Papa Fung’s double boiled soup!

Founder of Soupday, Mr. Fung has a father who is passionate about Chinese home cooking. Growing up in the U.S., he missed all the delicious Chinese dishes and soups back in Hong Kong. Despite the fact that he was thousands of miles away from his hometown, he was one of those lucky boys who could enjoy dad’s home cooking every night. During his time at the University of California Berkeley, Papa Fung always prepared hearty double boiled soup as a gesture of love and care for Mr.Fung.

Following his passion for the Food and Beverage industry, upon graduation from UC Berkeley, Mr. Fung was set to embark on a journey of sensory and taste. The first milestone was to earn a Certified Sommelier credential from the Court of Master Sommeliers. Armed with passion and knowledge, he ventured on to gain 8 years of experience from several Michelin star Western and Asian restaurants.

Mr. Fung recalls how there was one night, after a long exhausting day at work, he wanted to fix a quick supper. He missed the good old time when there was always a bowl of Papa Fung’s doubled boiled soup in the fridge. Thus, inspiring him to create the brand - “Soupday”, with the vision to promote the traditional Chinese knowledge of holistic wellbeing and to deliver the best quality double boiled soup to busy Hong Kongers at the click of a mouse.

The important “Why” - Why did Soupday become a SocialVegan eatery partner?

“The brand “Soupday" is about healthy lifestyle. People are getting more conscious about health. Healthy eating, working out, organic ingredients are the topics you hear every day. Veganism is great for both ourselves and the environment. We have decided to make vegan diet easier for everyone and dedicated one spot in each category for vegans including our vegan double boiled soup GREENDAY (Double Boiled Mixed Fungus Vegan Soup), vegan congee GOLDENDAY (Pumpkin & Sweet Corns Congee), vegan dessert SWEETDAY (Double Boiled Classic Fresh Almond Dessert - vegan option available on request) and vegan rice (Shanghai Vegetable Rice). We also offer other vegan options including steamed organic vegetables and vegetable dumplings. We understand that healthy eating is not easy, and vegan options are hard to find even in Central. We hope that with that one spot in each menu category reserved for vegans, we can contribute to the plant-based movement in Hong Kong and bring health and pleasure to all the plant-based eaters!”
